First Baptist Learning Center

Our approach to kindergarten

First Baptist Learning Center's program and staff are built on a solid foundation of excellence, represented by more than 45 years of educational service to the McKinney community.

FBLC’s Kindergarten offers a nurturing, small-class environment for five-year-olds (as of Sept. 1). With a 12:1 student-teacher ratio plus an aide, children receive personalized attention. Some families use this as a bridge to public/private kindergarten, while others continue to first grade.

Our curriculum aligns with Texas Essential Knowledge Skills and incorporates Everyday Mathematics, Handwriting Without Tears, and Lucy Caulkins, blending academics with Christian values through Lifeway’s Levels of Biblical Learning. We balance play and instruction, fostering whole-child development beyond academics.
Students enjoy a school day structured similarly to public school including classroom instruction, snack and lunch (parent provided), music, art studio, and outdoor learning. Our outdoor classroom extends learning outside, nurturing curiosity and exploration.

FBLC is an integral part of First Baptist Kid’s Ministry and the staff is supervised by the Business Administrator of First McKinney, but the program is funded entirely by tuition and fees.  Our fees and tuition reflect a competitive rate to cover all expenses including classroom resources, specials, and payroll. We follow the McKinney Independent School District calendar (Labor Day–May).

FBLC is a member of the Early Childhood Director’s Network, Early Childhood Christian Network, and the Texas Baptist Church Weekday Education Association.

Daily Routine

Kindergarten Supply List

Our kindergarten utilizes a curriculum based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), which are the state standards for what students should know and be able to do. This consists of a framework that sequences which concepts and skills should be taught and when they should be taught throughout the year, as well as provides a flexible set of resources (texts, lessons, supplemental instructional materials, etc.) that teachers can use to teach those skills and concepts.

• Bible Lesson- During this time we will practice the monthly verse and retell the bible story for the week. We will incorporate art and various activities during this time as well.

Readers Workshop- our goal is to develop proficient and strategic readers and writers. We embrace a balanced program, including the following components: teacher read-aloud, shared reading, word study activities, guided reading, strategy groups, and independent reading. The comprehension strategies include: purposes of reading, asking and responding to questions, monitoring and adjusting comprehension, making inferences, summarizing information, and making connections to our own experiences.

• Literacy Stations-
students are in guided reading groups. If your child is not meeting with the teacher, they will be engaged in Literacy Station tasks such as reading, listening to reading, letter work, word work, and writing.

• Writer's Workshop- We also want to develop students who love to share and write stories. Our workshop will include a mini-lesson, time for independent writing, conferring, and sharing time.

Mathematics- All activities are hands-on and spiral through skills children will need to become successful mathematicians. Students are involved in daily problem-solving, number talks, and math stations.

Science/Social Studies- We follow the Kindergarten TEKS and incorporate activities through FBLC’s themes.

 • Specials- Students attend special classes weekly such as Music and Art Studio.

Kindergarteners learn best through experience and hands-on, engaging activities. As such, parents should not expect to see many worksheets coming home.  The main form of communication is through the Procare App. The teacher will post pictures of class activities and other important information.
